10 Things I've Learned in 2012

I know, I know. I owe you a couple posts.

1) RAGNAR recap. It will be a faded memory by the time I get around to writing it.
2) A follow-up to last week's Listicles.

But first...it's time for another round of Monday Listicles. You should totally join in the fun! It's a different topic each week, and for this week...

TEN THINGS I'VE LEARNED IN 2012
  1. I'll likely never be a teacher. I LOVED student teaching and interacting with high school students, but I was spoiled by doing it in a co-teaching setting. I think I would be successful as a solo teacher, but I don't think I'd like it as much.
  2. It gets COLD in Vegas. This is relative, of course, since it's nowhere near as cold as it gets in MN. Still, cold is cold.
  3. Job searching is hard work. It's no wonder people are hesitant to switch jobs/careers. I hope to stay at my current employer for a long time - just so I don't have to endure going through that again anytime soon.
  4. Biking 7+ miles in the Vegas summer heat & altitude is not recommended.
  5. I am much better at meeting new people in small groups. Ok. This isn't a new lesson, but rather a reminder.
  6. I can safely and confidently bike to and from work. Nearly every day I congratulate myself at how I've improved at riding a bike over the past couple of years.
  7. Russian and Chinese history is fascinating! History in general is fun to learn about. Now that I'm done with school, I really should continue to read/learn more about this stuff.
  8. It's a huge struggle for me to incorporate strength training into my daily life. It's the easiest thing for me to skip, and it's probably more important than my cardio.
  9. I don't really like routines. I love variety. If everyday could be different, I would love it.
  10. ^^ I am not very consistent. At blogging. At running and exercise. At cooking.
What have you learned so far this year?

  1. You blog a lot more often than most of us so cut yourself some slack!

  2. Strength training is so hard to do. I wish I enjoyed it like I do cardio, because you're right: it probably is more important at my advanced age of 34. But I hate it so much, and my life is already full of chores. Also last time I did it, I hurt my neck enough that I couldn't work out at all for over a week. Kind of defeated the purpose.

    1. I know, right? Strength training shouldn't seem like a chore. But it does. :-( Sorry about your neck.

  3. I'm glad the bike ride to work is not only good for you, but safe, too. Keep working on that strength training. It is so good for you. (I say that as a person who does neither cardio nor strength training. I've given up trying until the kids are all in school.) I really didn't like history until I got out of school. Now, I love it. There isn't a historical marker that I won't break for. :)

  5. Good learning year :) Actually you had a lot of changes this year so how could it not be! I think you've done pretty well at the blogging thing - I feel like such a slacker these days! Also - it's so awesome that you are biking to work!

  6. Yay for biking to work! What's it like in Vegas? Is there much infrastructure like separated lanes, or quieter designated routes? I don't know if I'd bike as much as I do if I didn't live in a pretty bike-friendly neighbourhood with all bike lights, separated lanes & traffic calmed bike routes.

Here it doesn't really get that cold either--it's around 10c these days (50F) but it's the rain that gets to me. Makes for really lovely, tall trees, but very chilly soggy bike rides. :P

    1. No, there isn't really too much for infrastructure. There are a few bike lanes, but not very many. I've modified my route a few times to be able to incorporate roads with either bike lanes and/or less traffic, which has increased the mileage some. I'm pretty comfortable riding along with traffic, though

I've only been in Vegas for a few months, so I'm not too sure exactly how the winter will be. Right now, it's generally in the 50s when I head out in the mornings, and while it's a higher temp at night, it's also dark, so it feels about the same. Thankfully, not too much rain to deal with.

  7. I wish I had that love of history as you do. Its a force feed for me. And that is AWESOME that you bike to and from work. Completely jealous! :)

    1. I'm sure there are plenty of things you're interested in that would be a force feed for me. :) I really enjoy riding to/from work. I just wish the daylight hours were longer. How long til summer??

  8. I consistently avoid cooking! Love that you bike to work!
