Women...

Well, Stasha, my list isn't going to be very deep or inspiring, either. It's hard to think about celebrating women, when sometimes being a woman is so very physically painful. Ugh. I just hate it sometimes.

Here is a list of 5 images I found on Pinterest about women.

1. This one was the most powerful for me this morning. Nearly choked me up. Every woman has the power to do good and change the world (or at least seriously affect the lives of those around her). I have definitely seen it in my life and can only hope that I have been that woman to at least one person.

2. Strong women are amazing!

3. Women are survivors.

4. I love these.

5. I'm not sure I 100% agree with this because I do think that women can be strong, amazing, and influential just by quietly doing good and living life as best as they can. That being said, to fight for political or social change would take more radical behavior.

Sometimes, I like being a woman.
Sometimes, I really hate it. Physically. Emotionally.

I guess perhaps I should celebrate it more. Take the time to find inspiring women. Surround myself with them. I don't know.

I feel like this post is going nowhere pleasant, and I really should look over my lesson plan for this morning, so Have a great Monday!

How do you celebrate women?

That's one cute kid!

I crawled into bed and suddenly realized that I hadn't posted anything today! I wish I could say it was because was I SO productive, but, well, I just can't.

Since I need to be sleeping right now, I thought I'd just share my current favorite commercial.

Isn't he just about the cutest kid? Ever?

My favorite line - "No, a small cat." The way he says it just melts my heart.

Hope you all enjoyed your weekend!

CP Reflection Week 6

Yesterday's post was my 400th post. Should I have celebrated somehow?

I totally meant to work on this reflection throughout the week, but I just never took the time. Ugh! Maybe next week...

Thankfully, it was kind of a light week, so hopefully this doesn't take me too long to write up.

Monday, 3/5 - At the end of each unit, we have a day for current events about something related to the unit. Since we just finished a unit on Japan, the current events assignment was related to the tsunami/earthquake that hit Japan March 2011. The assignment might have been a little vague, and we may have assigned it without ample time, but in general, the presentations were really sub-par. It was disappointing. This current events assignment was created by my mentor teacher.

Tuesday, 3/6 - World History had their Japan unit test, so nothing to do for that class. I taught most of the class in AP Euro, though. It was on Soviet propaganda vs. the reality of life under Stalin and then taking that and discussing how the Socialist Realism movement was possible. I think the lesson went pretty well. I was relatively relaxed and confident in my lesson plan. It had to be quick because there were other things Nathan wanted to do i.e. go over their test from the day before, so it was a few video clips and some primary source readings. I am definitely pleased with how it went.

Wednesday, 3/7 - The other sections of World History took their Japan unit test. I still had quite a bit to do to prepare for my the Thu/Fri World History lesson, so most of my day was consumed with prepping that lesson. Also, I did get most of the exams graded. Well, my part of the grading. The students had to write 3 short essays out of 5 prompts, so my MT graded the answers to 1-3 and I graded 4-5. It's a system that works quite well for us. That's how we did the China unit test, too.

Thursday, 3/8 - Our next unit in World History is Latin America. My MT hasn't been really pleased with how this unit has gone in the past, so it is largely my creation. I really like what I came up with for an introductory lesson. First, we did a little free association to begin class. I asked the students what some of the first things were that they think of when I mention Latin America. Then I paired the students up and they drew the name of a Latin American city. I provided some guidance and let each pair do some research on their city to get a sense of what that area is like - its geography and climate, common activities for visitors, what the population looks like ethnically, what language they speak. The idea was to get them to recognize the diversity in Latin America. I thought it was a fascinating lesson! I enjoyed researching all the different areas even though it really bit me with the travel bug! After they did their research, they created a travel poster and presented their findings to the class in a quick 1-2 min presentation. I was really impressed with the creativity this class put into both their posters and presentations! I felt like it was a pretty effective lesson.

The rest of the day was spent grading tests and preparing for my next lesson.

I spent the evening making some minor changes to the World History lesson. Despite the changes being minor, it took me several hours. Mostly because I needed to include a few more locations because I forgot that one of the classes about 6 more students.

Friday, 3/9 - Same lesson in World History, but these two classes weren't nearly as creative and interested in the activity. Perhaps I ought to have left the lesson alone from the day before. Really, I think it  had more to do with the different personalities of the students. The third time around, I especially had difficulty getting the students to stay on task and focused on the project. Also, the 3rd time around, many of the students researched the country instead of focusing on the city. With some countries, the geography/climate can vary greatly from one area of the country to another, so this didn't really accomplish exactly what I was hoping for. Still, I would totally use this lesson again.

When I wasn't finishing the grading, I was working on my next lesson. Unfortunately, this was the first day I didn't end up having time to eat lunch. I should have gone during AP Gov since I was working in a different room, My MT was being observed by the principal but I thought I'd do down during lunch right before World History. Unfortunately, I didn't take into account the necessary set-up for my lesson, and suddenly class was starting in 10 minutes. Surprisingly, I made it through without even feeling too hungry!

Saturday, 3/10 - that's today! I finished writing my lesson plan for Mon/Tues. It's on the Olmec and Maya civilizations. I feel pretty good about it, but I still need to do some additional research on the Olmec to feel even somewhat confident during delivery. I imagine I'll spend a good deal of time on it tomorrow plus I'd like to get a good start on the next lesson plan, too.

Now, I'm off to sleep because I need to be uber-productive tomorrow, and I'll be losing an hour thanks to the time change.

What are your Sunday plans?

Flashback Friday & 5QF

Back in 2009, I posted this photo on my blog ... without ANY commentary.
I'm 99.9% sure it was part of a photo challenge on winter.
I'm fairly positive it's a picture of the Mississippi River, partially frozen over in March.

Such a different March than this year! Thankfully.

If you'd like a peek at what I was doing around this time back in 2008, I'd just started a new job. You can read about my 2nd day here.

******
And now for a little Five Question  Friday.

1. Are you looking forward to the time change this weekend?
Thanks for the reminder!☺I can't say I'm really looking forward to it. Springing ahead = losing an hour of sleep, right? I'm already always so tired. Of course, I will appreciate the shift is daylight hours. So, I guess I'm torn.

2. Are you getting the new iPad/would you want a iPad?
No and no. I'm SO not an Apple girl. Give me a PC any day. Also, we're trying to save all our money for our move this summer. No new toys for us for awhile.

3. If money was not a problem, what is the one thing you would splurge on?
Travel, without a doubt! I would go somewhere I'd never been before, stay in a nice hotel, explore all the activities in the area, enjoy all the different traditional foods. I want to see the world!

4. How did you and the Mr. (or Mrs.) meet?
We met at church.

5. Summer is right around the corner. Bikini or one-piece?
If I can find a cute bikini that is super flattering, then bikini. Otherwise, one-piece. It kind of depends on the activity I'll be doing as well as just how hot it actually is outside. Of course, we're likely moving to FL this summer, so bikini seems like it will be more natural there.

Any fun plans for the weekend? I'll be doing the usual - lesson planning. I have a half marathon next weekend, so I hope to get in some running, too. It's been over a week since I've been out.

Have a great weekend! Don't forget to spring ahead on Sunday!!

3TT #3

I really thought I'd done more of these...

Perhaps most Thursdays, I don't have 3 things to say...?

Thing 1. Teaching World History - particularly the way it is set up at this school - is no good for me. Every unit makes me want. to. travel! There are so many fascinating places to visit, sites to see, and activities to do. I just want to do experience it all. With my huge teacher salary, ha! perhaps I'll have the opportunity to travel during the summer and over longer breaks. What? A girl can dream, right?

Thing 2. Yesterday morning at this time, it was in the upper 40s! I wore flip flops when taking Sallie outside. I was tempted to wear them to school, too. Good thing I didn't because as the day progressed, the temperature steadily dropped. I was pretty cold when I was waiting for the bus after school. :-( Nearly 60°F weather on Tuesday really struck me with Spring Fever. Looking at the forecast, it should be nice enough weather for my half marathon on St Patrick's Day, though. The overnight low the night before is in the 40s, so it should be just about perfect temps for running. Hopefully it doesn't rain...

Thing 3. I went to bed way too late last night; I randomly woke up around 3am. Not only would Sallie not let me get back to sleep, She wanted breakfast, or at least a treat. but Jeff was big time snoring! Ugh! It is so difficult for me to fall back asleep with the sound of snoring. He snores more when he sleeps on his back, and I know that sleeping on his back is better for him because of his bad back, but I hate not being able to fall back asleep. Still, since I know he's getting some decent sleep, I hate to ask him to roll over. I'm much more passive aggressive about it. I try to accidentally nudge him or I toss and turn a LOT to maybe inspire his subconscious to make his roll over. Last night none of these little tricks were working, so I went to grab the noise cancelling headphones to see if they would help. Lo and behold, when I returned, he'd rolled to his side, taking up much of my side of the bed, and the snoring had stopped. Hallelujah! Except of course that he was nearly taking up the entire bed now, so I had to get comfortable in a very small area. It worked, though, and I quickly was back in dreamland. Until Sallie woke me up about 1 ½ hours later...

Where have you traveled that has been the most exciting? I haven't traveled very many places, but I think Costa Rica has been my favorite so far.

What are you looking forward to the most about Spring? The end of winter, of course! ☺Seriously, though, running outside more and maybe some photography. Who knows.

How do you handle a snoring partner? I already answered this, but I am definitely open for suggestions! I'd love to hear your solutions.

Readers v. Comments

Since I couldn't really come up with my own topic this morning, but wanted to get something out before heading to school, I decided, for the first time, to go with today's NaBloPoMo Writing Prompt:

Would you rather have more blog readers or more blog comments?

Ooh. This is a tough one.

At first, I'm really inclined to say comments, because I love the interaction that comes with comments and have made some bloggy friends because of reciprocal comments.

But, when I really think about it, readers are a little more important to me. Just knowing that my blog is out there and getting read is very satisfying, and without readers, there would be no comments, right?

Then, again, I rarely check my stats, mostly because my readership is quite low and I sometimes I find that depressing.

I guess that brings me back to comments. Those truly make me smile! Even if I only got one comment on every post, I would be elated.

Of course, I'm not always the best at leaving comments, so I suppose I shouldn't expect that from my readers, either. Sometimes I'm just too busy or I'm reading the post days weeks after it was published or I don't think I could add anything that hasn't already been said.

I am definitely more inclined to leave a comment on a post that has less than 10 or so comments than one that has more than that.

Ok, ok. IF I have to choose, I choose comments! :)

Since I'm not a stats checker, comments let me know someone is reading enjoying what I have to say.

Which do you prefer - more blog readers or more blog comments?

Advice for a Newbie

The other day, my sister-in-law asked me for some advice. She mentioned that she'd recently lost a significant amount of weight (yay!) and had registered for a 10K (sweet!) in April. She wanted my advice on walking/running shoes, tracking devices, etc.

I'm far from an expert on these things, but I offered some advice anyway. :-)

As I was thinking about the advice I sent her, I thought, "Hey! I should post this to my blog." I'm not sure if it's helpful or not.

Or even if it's good advice, but here is what I told her.

My best advice for running shoes is to visit a local running store. When you go in, just tell them you are new to running. If it is any kind of reputable store, they will do some kind of fitting for you - measuring, analyzing your gait, looking at your arches, or some variation of these. They will recommend a few for you and then you can choose whichever is most comfortable. They may even have a treadmill for you to test out the shoes on.

As for tracking gear, I don't have a lot of experience. I have an android-based smart phone with an app that I really like for tracking. It's called Cardio Trainer. You can track all kinds of different activities. Also, I am on Daily Mile. It's not real time tracking, but its great for social interaction and tracking all your workouts. I think it's fun and encouraging when people leave comments.

My only other big piece of advice is to find a running group or friend to run with. Lots of local running stores offer free running groups. I think the benefits of running with someone else are phenomenal.

What do you think? Good advice or bad? What advice would you give to someone just starting to explore the wonderful world of running?
